Blowing off steam

As Andreas and I work on a manifesto about the Lumiere videos, someone brought up the idea that we're competing with Blandlands, an exceptional site in its own right and entirely different, in my mind, than the Lumiere videos. In fact, despite having no real relationship w/ the Blandlands creator, I have nothing but respect for his work there and elsewhere, and Andreas further suggested that I make that clear on behalf of us both.

I find competition in this arena to be a rather perverse notion. Since when is art or even simple communication a rivalry? Not only is that a dull evolution of the creative process; it has no foreseeable benefits in a case such as this. While friendly opposition has been known to propel folks (myself included) forward at times, the idea that anyone is fighting for best compilation of tedious (or inspiring, depending on how you view it) footage is ridiculous.

So, let it be known that contention is not our aim; rather, I believe we're all just trying to encourage folks to make more observational media. I also captured this footage several weeks ago with the explicit intent to submit it to Valdez. Lumieres, in whatever way you interpret them, are one thing; refreshingly dull landscapes are quite another.

I went to beach twice this weekend because in addition to living next to the ocean and not interacting with it nearly enough, I also seem to be living the dream. As you'll understand, I did not (nor did anyone, to my knowledge) directly experience this vantage point in real time, so I like rewatching what wasn't seen until now.

Andreas reminds us of the rules, one of which I've already (though somewhat intentionally) broken - so warning - large, uncompressed files. Thank god I shot this in 320x240 from the jump. I'm also not sure I should recommend music, but I do think this track is the best I've found to match;to sync up, start the video five seconds after you start the music. This track is also pretty amusing (and should be started eight seconds after you start the video). Find more information about these respective songs/artists here and here.

I made this in the middle of the night, last night, for an assignment that was due today. B for the semester. Fine. Appropriate. Just get me out of here.

I've wanted to use this song in a video for years. It meant a tremendous amount to me in my earlier years, and it draws to mind times that I have long ago passed: sorta punk shows in weird, dive all-ages clubs in Indianapolis; driving home late at night on country roads, and making our own fun despite living in a less than interesting small town. But I still love all of those things so much, and I'm glad I grew up enough to appreciate the memories of home, wherever they appear.

I took less than half of this footage and have my friends to thank; those to whom I sometimes just hand the camera and say "do it to it". And they do. Sometimes I just need to live my life, even when it feels like it should be recorded too. Good folks know these things and step in to assist. They are all the best.

Maybe I'll redo this later, but sharing it now seems important.

One of my favorite parts of my walk between the subway and work is the bridge over the Mass Pike. Today I found a friend who likes the view and the sunshine as much as I do. The more I rewatch this clip, the more I see the similarities between us.

If you bother w/ the audio, you'll also hear the voice of another woman walking across the bridge at the same time & stopped because she saw me filming. We ended up finishing my walk together, talking about the habits of raccoons, the neighborhood, and being observant.

I'm not entirely comfortable with this post because I have control over someone's image who is no longer in my life and can't give consent for this video. I was resisting videoblogging week but decided I would do a theme in my life lately: the heart.

This picture is about three years old, taken when I was in undergrad by a friend who was doing a photo essay about my job running the student radio station. My now-ex was there that day as well and found some colored tape on the console, out of which he cut these little hearts and then adhered them to my hand. I found the photo last week when I was cleaning out some old files. It made me remember love.

I developed some sort of Croatian rash. I missed Amanda, who I'd left in Dubrovnik, where she stayed on to study for a month. I was worn out and slightly homesick. I came back.

Herzegovinian Dinner

After a day in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Mladin stopped to have dinner on a friend's farm - the same friends, it turns out, who gave us fruit earlier that day on the way to Medjugorje. They opened their home to us despite the fact that we could barely speak to them, and they served us fresh vegetables and ham from their farm. Vegetarian that I am, I was more interested in the ham's origin than the actual edible product, but I don't think anyone noticed. More homemade alcohol (wine this time), beautiful countryside, and hospitality unrivaled in all of my growing-up-in-the-Midwest experience.
